Step into the wisdom of mountain living
Step into a traditional Tsou house and experience the harmony between people and nature. Built from bamboo and thatch, these homes are typically rectangular or oval, centered around a hearth that serves as the heart of family life and connection. Overhead racks store food and animal hides, reflecting a lifestyle closely tied to the natural environment.
The spatial layout also embodies cultural meanings of gender roles. The front door, facing east, is associated with men’s activities, while the rear, facing west, belongs to women’s daily life and work. The front yard is used for hunting rituals and ceremonies, while the back is for raising poultry—revealing an orderly and meaningful tribal life.
Within this seemingly simple structure lies a deep connection to nature, spirituality, and family, carrying forward the cultural memory of the Tsou people through generations.
